Langar & Community Traditions

Generosity, shared food and service: the heart of community life at a shrine.

The meaning of langar

Langar is a shared meal offered to all who come, regardless of who they are. It reflects equality and hospitality, an old tradition around shrines across South Asia, where feeding others is understood as an act of devotion.

Current arrangements

Meal times and arrangements can differ between ordinary days and the Urs. Please ask the Khadim for current information before you plan around it.

Giving and serving

Time, skills and kindness are as valuable as money. Those who wish to contribute to Dargah activities can see the donations page.

Taking part respectfully

If you wish to take part in community meals or offerings, a few simple habits help everyone.

  • Ask before bringing food to share.
  • Follow the guidance of those serving.
  • Take what you need and keep the surroundings clean.
  • Give time and kindness; they are as valuable as money.
