TRADITIONS

Chadar, Niyaz & Tabarruk

Understanding the offerings people bring to the mazar.

Chadar

A chadar is a cloth, often embroidered, placed over the mazar as a sign of love and respect. Along with roses, it is among the most common offerings, especially around the Urs.

Niyaz

Niyaz is food prepared in the name of a saint and shared with others, with a prayer of remembrance recited over it. Its spirit is generosity: feeding people is the point.

Tabarruk

Tabarruk is what is shared after prayers or niyaz, such as sweets or food, received with respect as a remembrance of the blessing of the occasion.

Offering respectfully

Ask the Khadim how and when to make an offering, and what arrangements are in place. Do not feel pressured to give beyond your means; a small, sincere offering is as welcome as a large one.

Before you make an offering

A few questions help you make an offering smoothly and respectfully.

  • What kind of offering is usual, and how should it be presented?
  • Who should I ask about niyaz or tabarruk arrangements?
  • Are there busy periods when offerings are arranged differently?
