PLAN YOUR VISIT
A calm, practical guide for first-time visitors and families.
Ziyarat means visiting. At a shrine it is a visit of remembrance: saying salaam, reciting Fatiha and other prayers, and making dua for yourself, your family and the world.
Dress modestly and comfortably, and keep your valuables to a minimum. If you plan to offer roses or a chadar, ask the Khadim what is usual. Contact him beforehand for current timings and arrangements, since these can change.
Speak softly, keep to the line, and give others room to pray. Ask before taking photographs. With children, hold hands in crowded spaces. If you are unsure what to do, ask a Khadim; people here are used to first-time visitors.
During the Urs, millions are described as attending, and the main sandal is at 4:00 AM on 29 Moharram. Arrive early, stay together as a group, agree on a meeting point, and be patient. Roses and chadar are the usual offerings.
Small preparations make a visit calmer for you and for others.
